INVOKANA USES & INJURIES
Doctors have been prescribing Invokana to type-2 diabetes patients since it was approved by the FDA back in 2013. Belonging to a class of medicines known as SGLT2, Invokana works by passing excess blood sugar out of the body in the urine stream of patients. Invokana is not without some serious, potentially deadly side effects that were not properly warned by Janssen Pharmaceuticals and parent company Johnson & Johnson, including:
- Amputation: In May, 2017 the FDA required a black box warning placed on Invokana to warn of the increased risk for leg and foot amputations as a result of taking the diabetes drug. While toe and middle of the foot were the most common amputations, some patients have required multiple amputations.
- Ketoacidosis: In May, 2015 the FDA issued a drug safety communication informing patients and doctors of the potential link between Invokana and other types of SKLT2 diabetes medications and the development of ketoacidosis. Marked by symptoms such as difficulty breathing, vommiting, nausea, abdominal pain and extreme fatigue, Ketoacidosis requires hospitalization and medical monitoring to get the body’s acid levels back under control.
- Kidney issues: In June, 2016 the FDA strengthened their warning related to kidney issues as a result of taking Invokana. Causing kidney failure and other issues, Invokana patients risk dangerous amounts of waste building up in their bodies when this happens.
