The concept makes sense in theory- grind up dangerous and painful uterine fibers and then remove them from the patient with limited intrusion and a short recovery time. Unfortunately, in execution it doesn’t exactly work that way. Power Morcellators (also known as electric morcellators) were a popular alternative to more invasive surgeries used for hysterectomies, myomectomies, oophorectomy and salpingectomy. Like so many defective and dangerous medical devices, power morcellators were inadequately tested before being pushed onto the market.
POWER MORCELLATOR INJURIES
A long tube with sharp blades at the end, the power morcellator grinds the uterine fibers into tiny pieces that are then vacuumed out.
In many cases, what should happen and what does happen when a power morcellator was used in a surgery are two different things. In grinding up the uterine fibers, some of the fibers may not make it in the vacuum and instead spread in the body. This could and did cause and spread cancer in patients. This major cancer risk resulted in two FDA warnings in 2014:
- In April 2014, the FDA advised against the use of power morcellators in the treatment of uterine fibroids that have a suspected malignancy. Included in their warning was this statement about the very real risk of cancer: “If laparoscopic power morcellation is performed in women with unsuspected uterine sarcoma, there is a risk that the procedure will spread the cancerous tissue within the abdomen and pelvis, significantly worsening the patients likelihood of long-term survival.”
- In November of 2014, the FDA took their warning further and required a black box warning on all packages.
The risk of a cancer spread is very real– about one in every 350 women who have hysterectomies and myomectomies for uterine fibroids also have a type of uterine cancer known as unsuspected uterine sarcoma. In response to these warnings, many doctors stopped using morcellators completely and in 2014 Johnson & Johnson (one of the biggest manufactuers of power morcellators) not only recalled their devices but asked doctors to send them back to them out of fear that they were causing and spreading cancer.
