WHY ARE PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS SO DEADLY?

Posted by Robert Walch | 9 November 2017 | 0 Comments

When a pedestrian is hit by a car, truck or even a motorcycle, it simply is not a fair fight. The speed, the weight and the steel coming at them is a force that our bodies are not made to handle very well. And for that simple reason, when there is a pedestrian accident they are very serious and often deadly.

Accounting for fourteen percent of all accident fatalities, here’s a look at some of the most common causes of pedestrian accidents and some tips for when you are walking:

  • Poorly lit areas: The number of evening and early morning pedestrian accidents are much higher than when it is broad daylight. Not surprisingly, when it is dark it is just harder to see someone. If you are out after hours, make sure you are on a sidewalk or designated pedestrian path and do your best to get into lit areas. Bright clothing helps too.
  • Not obeying traffic laws: More pedestrian accidents happen outside the intersection than in for the simple reason that a driver is much less likely to be paying attention to someone on foot in these areas. Additionally, drivers not yielding to traffic laws cause a lot of pedestrian accidents as well. While you cannot do much to avoid the latter, you can make sure that you are crossing at intersections and staying on sidewalks when you are out and about on foot.
  • Children: Kids run everywhere with little regard for traffic safety. Small and unpredictable, pedestrian kid accidents are simply devastating. Train and reward your children to observe the rules of the road and pedestrians and keep a close eye on them whenever you are in a public place.
